Glaucoma is the 2nd leading cause of blindness worldwide. Blindness resulting from glaucoma is IRREVERSIBLE. Because it has NO early symptoms, it is difficult to detect without regular examination by an eye specialist.

In Glaucoma, one develops a progressive irreversible damage to the optic nerve which results in gradual painless and permanent visual loss.
The exact cause is not clear. However, it has been shown by numerous studies that elevated eye pressure is one of the contributing factors to Glaucomatous optic nerve damage. Control of the intra ocular pressures can slow down / stop the progression of the disease.

Several tests now exist for diagnosis and follow up. They are not readily available in sub-Saharan Africa. However, at UHEAL, all the equipment is available including the gold standard OCT derived Disc Damage Likelihood Scale (DDLS) and stereoscopic Optic Disc analysis.

Several people are especially at risk. People of African ancestry, people living with diabetes, shortsighted persons, people who have a 1st degree relative with Glaucoma and anyone over the age of 40yrs. In rare cases, one can be born with the disease.

A single eye test can save you from Glaucoma related irreversible blindness.
