At the UHEAL Oculoplastic and Adnexal Clinic diseases of the Eyelid, the Lacrimal system and the Orbit are managed. These are systems which play important roles in maintaining the normal function of the eye.
The Eyelid has the function of protecting the eye ball and thus preserving vision. The normal lid opens the eye wide enough and closes the eye completely. Diseases of the lids include Lid infections and Inflammations eg Styes, Blepharitis; Lid abnormal positions eg Ptosis (droopy upper lids); Lid deformities eg Ectropion - scarring with inability to close, Entropion - scarring with in-turning of lashes; Lid tumours and cysts; Cosmetic deformities of the eyelids eg excess skin and eyelid bags.
The Lacirmal Drainage system refers to the system which drains tears from the eye. It begins at the inner corner of the eye and opens into the nose. Normal production and drainage of tears is essential for normal function of the eye. Disturbances of this system include obstructions leading to tearing eyes eg Nasolacrimal Duct Obstruction; infections leading to eye discharge eg Canaliculitis.
The Orbit is the space in which the eye and the tissues behind and around the eye sit. It is surrounded by bone. The orbital tissues are important for the normal function of the eye. For example the optic nerve, which carries information from the eye to the brain; the eye muscles, which move the eye to look in different directions; the lacrimal gland which produces tears. Diseases affecting these tissues include infections and inflammations eg Orbital Cellulitis, Orbital Inflammatory disease, Thyroid Eye disease; Orbital tumours eg Optic nerve glioma, Lymphoma, Carvenous Heamangioma; advanced Eye Tumours.
